2020 Annual Uniport Founder’s Day Celebration

In a bid to ensure that our students don’t just pass through the University but that the University equally passes through them, Batch 7 students of the Centre on Thursday 6th February 2020 joined other members of the University of Port Harcourt community to observe the annual Founders’ day.

The event which was aimed at honouring benefactors of the University was held at the Ebitimi Banigo Hall of the University with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof N. E. S. Lale, as the Chairman of the event. The guest speaker Prof Michael Oladimeji Faborode, a former Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and former Secretary-General Committee of Vice-Chancellors, spoke on the topic Our strength is Our wealth and the role of the University in the 21st Century.

He highlighted some ways through which Nigerian Universities can contribute meaningfully to nation building in line with global best practices. He further explained the benefits that accrue to countries which embrace the Triple-Helix plus model approach in achieving sustainable growth and development.

Prof Faborode expressed optimism that the University of Port Harcourt having Institutes and Centres such as Centre for Gas, Refining and Petrochemicals (CGRP) existing as part of its system has the robust capacity to achieve this objective.

In addition to the principal officers of the University, other dignitaries present at the event include the 7th Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof J. A. Ajienka and the Ag. Director of CGRP, Dr I. J. Otaraku. The event was well attended by students of the Centre and well spiced up with music and drama presentations. Our students expressed their delight in being part of this year’s event as it afforded them the opportunity to understand the University better as well as to unwind a little from the academic pressure.

Kudos to everyone who made this event possible!
