Our Facilities

The Centre for Gas, Refining and Petrochemicals provides academic and research facilities that support postgraduate education, practical training and applied research.

Modular refinery plant (Wet Laboratory)

The Centre has a Distillation Pilot Plant donated by the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited under the NLNG University Support Programme. It is a single automated batch distillation unit based on ASTM D2892 method for distillation of crude oil and cuts capable of full range distillation from debutanization (removal of light ends), to a full simulation of the atmospheric column for cuts up to 392 oF, to full simulation of the vacuum column with vacuum down to 0.5 mm Hg which yields an atmospheric equivalent temperature cut of approximately 840 oF; which is also equipped with a single semi-continuous crude desalter unit to prepare batches of crude oil for the distillation unit, capable of processing up to 25 liters per day of continuous operations to prepare feed for the distillation unit.

In addition to the dry laboratory, where crude samples are pre-treated before being refining in the wet laboratory using the facility a (above), the centre share laboratory facilities with the departments of chemical engineering, petroleum and gas engineering, as well as other engineering departments (Civil/Environmental, Mechanical) for related research works. These laboratories are as follows:

NB:  The Hydraulics/Fluid Mechanics laboratory is equipped with the following:

  1. Delta particulate collector SF-30, Model AP 300
  2. Multifunctional environmental meter for monitoring / measurement of flow
  3. Sound level (dB) measurement
  4. Temperature measurement
  5. Humidity measurement
  6. Illuminance (lux) measurement
  7. Wind speed measurement
  • Humidity Alarm
  1. QRAE ll combustile hydrocarbon / toxic concentration monitor with accessories
  2. SAW 4 multi-Gas Detector / meter methane, CO2, SO2, NO2  and LEL
  3. CW-HAT 200S Air Monitor for PM10 and PM25 measurement
  • Professional Weather Centre- complete weather station with data logging.

These laboratories are adequately equipped to meet the daily need of the students for teaching and research.  There are new and current analytical equipments in the analytical laboratory and the laboratories have quality reagents to meet experimental need of the research endeavours of the Centre.

The centre has one big classroom that has three air conditioners, white teaching board, over projector, in focus, screen and three industrial standing fans. This classroom can adequately accommodate up to 30 students. But because the centre runs only specialized masters, it takes only few students that can stand the rigors of the course work.

The Centre also has a well furnished 100 seat- capacity auditorium. It has 4 (four) standing air conditioners, very high ceiling to aid in the circulation of air, a platform, teaching aids (projector, in focus and screen), very comfortable chairs and tables for the platform.

The centre has a well equipped library with state-of-the-art facilities which can accommodate twenty (20) students at a time. This library comprises of the physical and electronic library
